A "vile" pile of waste that has been dumped along a country lane in Bushey is set to be cleared up.

The mound of rubbish in Little Bushey Lane is believed to have been lying there since mid-February and locals have been pushing to get it removed.

Hertsmere Borough Council said this week that it will remove the rubbish and carry out an investigation to work out who was responsible for dumping it.

But some people in Bushey have criticised the time it has taken the council to act.

Bushey North councillor Alan Matthews said: "We got onto the council straight away because it's very visible. But Hertsmere said it was Hertfordshire County Council land and nothing happened.

"A number of people have kept reporting the rubbish and we went back to the council this week to say that this really has got to be sorted."

His Liberal Democrat colleagues described the fly-tip as "vile" in a Facebook post and said it contains potentially toxic materials, including paint and wood preservative.

Cllr Matthews added: "Flytipping is a problem in Bushey - on the A41 it is a regular issue. Once a site has become established as an illegal fly-tip, it acts as a magnet for more.

"There's a lot of good work done in Hertsmere but it's a shame to drive down the A41 and see it like a wasteland. Councils have to take quick effective action and that is what has been lacking."

The borough council says the land in question in Little Bushey Lane is owned by the county council and the Metropolitan Bushey venue; the latter has also been pushing for the waste to be cleared.

Cllr Seamus Quilty, who has environmental responsibilities in Hertsmere, said yesterday his council will take "immediate steps" to clear the rubbish, adding the council is in discussions with the club and the county council about any further measures that might prevent fly-tipping at this site.

He added: "Preventing flytipping remains very much a collective effort.

"Householders have responsibilities to choose a legitimate waste carrier and ensure their waste is responsibly disposed of as most fly-tipped offences that we investigate have shown that the waste has originated at domestic premises."
