Volunteers who feared they would have to stop their work supporting people affected by the war in Ukraine have found a new home.

Polish club Szaniec has distributed more than 25 tonnes worth of goods to Poland from its temporary hub in Kings Langley.

But volunteers had to leave the Monks Buttery warehouse by Saturday that had been donated to them and had been desperately appealing for a new storage space.

Councils and businesses were approached but no suitable accommodation was offered but a last-ditch appeal has been successful.

Watford FC great Luther Blissett spotted the club's appeal in the Observer last week and has managed to arrange for them to operate from Woodside Leisure Centre in Garston.

Luther's partner Lauren Fox contacted Szaniec member Justyna McIvor on Friday and on Monday, they visited the leisure centre.

Justyna says the space is "perfect" and it means she and her fellow volunteers will be able to keep collecting donations and arranging for them to be sent to Lublin in Poland by working with charity Caritas.

Luther has been working with the charity Goods for Good in their Ukraine appeal and he knew that Woodside leisure centre had a space for volunteers to work from.

He said: "I called Gary Foley at Everyone Active and asked if the space at Woodside could be given to Szaniec and Gary said yes immediately. It was an incredible gesture. We met Justyna and Artur [from Szaniec] on Monday and I have to say there were a few tears."

Justyna said: "We are really grateful to Luther and the leisure centre. It is just a massive relief for us and they can help us further with transport and have also been working with Caritas as well."

Szaniec are hoping to be up and running in their new home very soon.
