Major track upgrades have been carried out at Watford Junction - but passengers are being warned of more disruption over the next bank holiday as well.

The West Coast Mainline was completely shut between Watford and London Euston over Easter because of "essential upgrades" being undertaken by Network Rail.

All London Northwestern trains were beginning and ending in Milton Keynes and London Overground services into Euston were also disrupted. The line is now running normally again.

Network Rail says there was £22 million of investment along the line, including track improvements by Watford Junction which it says will allow "more train flexibility" into the capital.

However, more track upgrade work is planned in Watford, as well as in Wembley, over the May bank holiday.

Network Rail says Euston station will be closed to mainline train services between Saturday April 30 and Monday May 2 with trains once again starting and finishing in Milton Keynes.

Network Rail is advising the best time to travel over this period will be on Friday April 29 and Tuesday May 3.

Tim Shoveller, managing director for Network Rail’s North West & Central region, said: "Hundreds of frontline staff worked throughout the bank holiday to improve journeys for passengers and freight in the North West and Central region and I’m immensely proud of them and our contractors who helped Network Rail deliver these major upgrades.

"This is just the start of 2022’s work to make the West Coast main line more reliable for our passengers and pave the way for HS2, Britain’s new zero-carbon railway.

"Now our attention turns to the Early May Bank Holiday when more essential railway improvements will take place.

"Once again Euston station will be closed so passengers are being urged to travel either side of the bank holiday on Friday 29 April and Tuesday 3 May."
