A stretch of the M25 will remain closed this morning with motorists being warned of 90-minute delays back towards Watford.

The clockwise carriageway between Junction 23 for Hatfield and Junction 25 for Enfield was shut yesterday (Tuesday) after a large spillage of cooking oil.

National Highways has warned it will stay closed throughout the morning “due to the complex nature of the clean-up” with “severe delays” expected.

Traffic is tailing back to Junction 21 for Bricket Wood and the M1 – with live traffic cameras showing gridlock congestion.

A diversion route has been put in place:

  • From the M25 Junction 23 exit slip to roundabout and take the 5th exit onto A1 towards London.
  • Follow the A1 towards Central London through “Stirling Corner”, “Apex Corner” and “Mill
    Hill Circus” to “Fiveways Corner”.
  • Bear left onto A1 to “Henlys Corner”. At “Henlys Corner” bear left and continue onto the A406 North Circular Road towards “Wood Green”.
  • Follow the A406 North Circular Road towards Enfield and at “Great Cambridge Junction” take the exit slip to roundabout
  • Take the 1st exit onto the A10 towards Hertford.
  • Follow the A10 towards Hertford and re-join M25 at Junction 25.

National Highways said the above route has a height restriction of 15'6 (4.7m).

A suggested alternative for vehicles with a greater height is travel north on the A1(M) north from Junction 23 of the M25, exit at J4 of the A1(M) and take the A414 eastbound through Hertford to the interchange with the A10 and then travel south on the A10 to Junction 25 of the M25.
