Customers were quickly evacuated to safety after a “big puff” of smoke began to fill up a Tesco store.

Staff at the Tesco Express in St Albans Road were quick to act after signs of smoke began to appear in the store today (April 29) just before 2pm.

Callowland councillor Dennis Watling was present at the time and hailed staff for making customer safety their priority.

After everyone was taken outside safely, staff remained behind.

According to a Hertfordshrie Fire and Rescue spokesperson, fire services did not attend the scene.

Local businesses told the Observer that the issue appeared to have resolved in under an hour after the incident.
