Many of us were brought up to believe that if things start to go wrong, the best thing to do is find a policeman.

But tell that to north Watford man Paul Groves, who was asked by the police to stop trying to enforce the law when motorists repeatedly drove through a bus lane near his house.

Faced with no action after having been in touch with the authorities for two years, he took to wearing high-visibility clothing and physically blocking cars trying to use the bus lane as a cut-through to the roundabout on the A41.

In the process he received verbal abuse, and on one occasion was even clipped by a wing mirror.

But instead of the drivers who were breaking the law, it was Mr Groves who was on the receiving end of a warning from the police.

The Watford Observer understands camera enforcement may be on its way for the bus lane - as it is supposed to be for the notorious Woodmere Avenue width restriction.

The police’s actions may have been for Mr Groves’ own good, but it would be good to know that in the meantime the people who break the rules are getting in trouble, not the only person trying to enforce them.
