A head teacher has warned “decisive” action is needed after more concerns were raised about “extremely dangerous” parking near a school.

Residents fear “lives are being put at risk” by the state of parking in Aldenham Road in Bushey.

Queens’ school head Jonathan Morrell says drivers parking on grass verges is “clearly a concern for all” and his comments come after Bushey North county councillor Laurence Brass wrote to Hertfordshire County Council calling for “urgent action”.

Cllr Brass said the “chronic” parking issue by the school and the Metropolitan Bushey venue has “persisted for many years” and often receives reports of near-misses from parents, but said “now is time to act”.

The Liberal Democrat councillor, who was elected last year, said drivers using the pavement to park on the verge is posing a “serious hazard” to pedestrians, most commonly during school pick-up and drop-off times, as well as at weekends when sports clubs visit Metropolitan Bushey.

Cllr Brass said he has been in talks with the county council, Hertsmere Borough Council and the police, as well as the school and Met club, but no long-term solution has been reached.

He believes drivers should be stopped from being able to drive onto the verge and said council officers could do this by increasing the size of the kerb or putting in bollards, or by painting double yellow lines. In the short-term, he said cones should be installed.

In a letter to the county council, Cllr Brass said: “There are no barriers to prevent the parking. A great many residents have rightly expressed their deep concerns to us, it is no exaggeration to say lives are being put at risk.

“We have engaged extensively with the school and Met Club who are equally frustrated and concerned by the situation and have done all they can. No amount of encouraging behavioural change will stop this. The time to act is now.”

Mr Morrell added: “The potential for a traffic accident is now greater than ever and the risk posed to pedestrians of particular concern.

“Decisive action is required sooner rather than later and I would urge the county council to review all the available options and present a solution.”

The county council has been approached for comment.
