A section of the M25 was closed for over an hour at the weekend as police responded to an incident.

Hertfordshire Constabulary shut off junctions 16 and 17 on the M25 near Rickmansworth on Sunday (May 22) at around 12.25am.

Drivers were instructed to avoid the area during the time as officers dealt with an incident.

The National Highways alerted motorists about the closure, but it was never made clear what the incident was.

A spokesperson for Hertfordshire Constabulary has now confirmed that the closure was in response to a concern for welfare situation, which was “resolved safely”.

According to updates from both police and the National Highways, the motorway reopened at some point near 1.40am.
