"Common sense has prevailed" after road closures that could have made it almost impossible to get across a village were shelved.
Ann Johnson alerted Hertfordshire County Council when she saw its plans to close both Bunker’s Lane and Toms Lane for gas works from May 30 to June 3 would result in miles of diversions.
After she raised her concerns, the council agreed to close just Bunkers Lane.

Ms Johnson said: “I never complained to the council but made a suggestion. Closing both roads doesn’t make sense to the people that live around here trying to get from one side of the village to another.
“It makes me happy that common sense has prevailed, that they have listened, and only one road is closing at a time.”
Ms Johnson, who has lived in Kings Langley for more than 30 years, explained closing both roads at once had significant pitfalls.
She said: “The council didn’t seem to have looked on a map, and the roads they wanted to close were the safest diversion roads. If you live on some of those roads, you are going to have to deal with it aren’t you?
“There are alternatives, but they are single track, very bendy and quite dangerous.
“One of my concerns was that the diversion routes that they were putting in were quite long. It’s about seven or eight miles if you are going to shut Toms Lane to get round.
“And, with the cost of fuel, etc, and everybody trying to be more cost conscious, it didn’t make sense for the people that have got to live with the diversions.”
A spokesperson for Hertfordshire County Council said: “We have asked for the Toms Lane works to be postponed to avoid a clash with a diversion route for another set of works in the town, and to ensure that residents are given sufficient notice.
“The new date for these works has not yet been agreed. We’d like to apologise for any inconvenience caused.”
