Watford has the best mobile phone coverage outside of London, according to research by a retailer.

The town ranked third with its coverage and was found to be nearly 12 per cent better than the UK average.

Fonehouse’s study used data from Ofcom's Connected Nations 2021 report and coverage checker tools on operators Three, Vodafone, EE and O2’s websites to create a total coverage score out of 2,500, using five factors.

The factors were 5G, 4G, 3G, voice and data services.

After all the numbers were crunched, Watford ranked third with a score of 2,427 - only behind Camden and Brent in London. The remaining top seven were filled by other London boroughs and Kingston-upon-Hull.

The worst coverage was found to be in Northern Ireland, Scotland, and coastal areas.

Ben Branson, chief executive of Fonehouse, said: “Mobile networks are constantly evolving and improving as years go by, as more networks put up masts around the country, improving the scope and quality of mobile coverage.”
