The cost of living crisis is getting worse and shows no sign of getting better in the short or medium term. Yes, the Government may be about to finally tax the oil and energy giants and give every household £400 but whilst this is welcome it’s a drop in the ocean for most of us and will do little to enable many working people or pensioners to eat properly or heat their homes. And it certainly won’t do anything to help climate change which is important to many of the people I’m talking to these days.

Politicians don’t seem to have any idea as to how we should deal with the crisis so is there a way out of this mess? Maybe. I think the Government should resume the Quantitative Easing (QE) programme just as it did in 2008 with the banking crisis and over the last two years with Covid. The Government “created” £895 billion of new money and not only was it largely successful in dealing with the problem but did not lead to inflation either. I don’t think it’s particularly politically controversial because it was Labour that managed the banking crisis and the Conservatives Covid. I think it’s time for a third round of QE.
