A gang of boys left a pregnant hedgehog horribly injured in a cruel and sadistic attack.

The youths kicked and threw stones at the defenceless animal in Porters Park Drive, close to the junction with Tagalie Place, Shenley at around 7pm on Monday (June 20).

The attack was halted by two passers-by, who the gang hurled abuse at before fleeing down an alleyway.

The attackers are thought to be aged between 12 and 13.

The hedgehog suffered a broken leg, spinal injuries, and was partially blinded.

After being taken in by London Colney Hedgehog Rescue Centre, she gave birth to three hoglets, but all have died, the centre says.

The microchipped hedgehog was born at a rescue centre last year after her mother was injured and then released into the wild in October.

She is currently being cared for by vets.

As a result of the attack, she has lost sight in one of her eyes, suffered a fracture and cut to her jaw, a broken leg, and injures to her spine.

Police have launched an appeal for witnesses.

PC Dan Hill said: “Thankfully two passers-by intervened as I doubt this hedgehog would have survived the attack otherwise.
