Park-goers have been warned that barbecues are banned in Watford parks after a significant increase over recent weekends.

The borough council said they leave scorched grass that takes months to recover and can also cause out-of-control fires in dry conditions.

Councillor Tim Williams issued the reminder this week saying it is “disappointing that these requests are necessary”, but over the last year firefighters have attended over 20 incidents.

“Abuse of our parks is never acceptable and there is no excuse for it,” he added.

“We are working closely with Veolia, Herts Police and Herts Fire Service on these issues.”

A Herts Police spokesperson told the Watford Observer they would not arrest those flouting the rule.

The borough council said on some occasions people have tipped burning hot coals into litter bins and have nearly set them on fire.

It also called on park-goers to bag up their rubbish and dispose of it properly – even if that means taking it home.
