A photographer captured this powerful shot of a firefighter silhouetted against the flames of a field fire.

The blaze raged through a dry field near Berkhamsted for hours, sending thick smoke drifting across the sky.

A line of flames swept across the field after the fire broke out on Monday afternoon (August 8).

Hertfordshire Fire & Rescue sent ten of its fire engines to the scene in Chesham Road after being called at 1.34pm and remained in the area until 8.25pm.

Smoke could be seen from Bovingdon and Chipperfield as crews from across Hertfordshire, including Watford and Kings Langley, battled the fire.

One picture showed a single firefighter attempting to control part of it.

An eyewitness said: "We were on our way back from Watford shopping centre when we spotted the flames.

"We drove over to have a look and they were huge - as tall as the firefighters battling them.

"There was a vehicle in flames out on the field and there's speculation that caused the blaze - but no-one knows for sure."

They added: "I'm just glad the firefighters were able to deal with it as well as they did and nobody was hurt."

The fire service says the cause of the fire is under investigation.
