Pictures of Watford General Hospital's sinkhole and sizeable remedial works have emerged as the trust continues to assess the damage.

The site has been cordoned off and surrounded by opaque fencing since a hole appeared by the Vicarage Road entrance on Sunday.

But resourceful resident Stephen Danzig has managed to get several snaps, which appear to show workmen digging holes to access the pipework.

There is also a shot of what is believed to be the sinkhole, which the trust said was around two metres by one metre, and half a metre deep.

The West Herts trust said a leak from 1960s pipework caused the problem and warned its creaking infrastructure risks similar incidents in future.

A spokesperson said it is currently unclear how long the works will take as the full extent of the damage is still being assessed.

They also confirmed the trust will pay for it with contingency funds.

“When we have unexpected bills that are over and above the usual cost of delivering clinical services, we do make a case for additional retrospective funding and have received this in the past,” the spokesperson added.

“We will consider this approach once the full costs of the repair are known.

"Our immediate priority is to understand the scope of the issue and to resolve it.”
