This scene was captured around a century ago in what is now one of Watford's major roads - and one word makes it possible to work out exactly where the picture was taken.

The Watford Observer is delighted to share photos from the Watford Museum archive and this week we recall a shop that sold eggs.

The museum's volunteer archivist Christine Orchard said: "This image is simply labelled 'St Albans Road, near to town' but it has one feature, on the left-hand side, to locate it: lettering on a shop window which, on the original photo, reads 'Eggs'.

"This was the shop of Bull & Son, egg merchants, who were on the corner of St Albans Road and Weymouth Street. The sunlight that floods across the pavement, next to the shops, is where the road entrance was.

"Today this scene is dominated by the Town Hall roundabout. Beechen Grove which leads from the roundabout, follows the line of Weymouth Street."
