The Liberal Democrats have won a by-election returning the party to control of every seat on a parish council.

The party's candidate Mo Rattab was victorious after voters in Bedmond ward on Abbots Langley Parish Council went to the polls on September 8.

The seat was vacant following the death of Liberal Democrat councillor Jean Bowman.

Cllr Rattab, of Bedmond, secured 199 votes out of the 330 votes cast - a turnout of 29 per cent.

He was reportedly not present at the count nor when the result was announced. Parish council chairman Stephen Giles-Medhurst confirmed the newly-elected councillor signed a declaration of acceptance the following morning.

The Conservative candidate David Pollard came second with 87 votes, followed by Labour’s John Cooper with 34 and Independent candidate Belinda Phipps with 9.

The Lib Dems hold all 15 seats on the parish council, which serves more than 23,000 residents including in Abbots Langley, Leavesden, Bedmond, and Hunton Bridge.

The parish council runs community halls and venues, sports facilities and open spaces and allotments, as well as maintaining those areas and running community events.
