Watford Foodbank has announced it will be closed on Monday because of the funeral of Queen Elizabeth II.

Many foodbanks across the UK have made the decision to close for the day as a sign of respect for Her Majesty – triggering commentary whether this should happen amid the cost of living crisis.

Andrew Tranter, of Watford Foodbank, said: “The consensus of the foodbank team is to close on that day as a mark of respect for our dearly loved and respected monarch, the Royal Family and King Charles III.

“The foodbank is open each day this week including Saturday and those needing our services are most welcome.”

Some foodbanks under the Trussell Trust network have decided to U-turn and stay open following a backlash from the public.

The Wimbledon branch announced that “due to the overwhelming support we have received we now have volunteers to run our Monday session as usual".

Emma Revie, chief executive of the Trussell Trust, said: “Food banks in our network run sessions on different days and at different times.

“Food banks are best placed to make the right decision for their communities and will ensure everyone who needs support can access it as they do with every bank holiday.

“As each food bank is an independent charity, we’d encourage people who need support to contact their local food bank to check their opening hours.”
