A fly-tip that spread across the pavement next to a litter bin contained 'odd stuff' including Xbox packaging and furniture.

Cllr Matthew Turmaine, who represents Holywell at Watford Borough Council saw the rubbish in Hagden Lane, Watford, in the afternoon of Monday, September 19.

He believes the illegal dump, which included Xbox packaging and a chair, was from a single household.

In a post on Twitter, he said: “I’ve reported this fly-tipping in West Watford, spotted yesterday afternoon. Hopefully, it will be cleared soon. #DontFlyTip.”

Speaking to the Watford Observer, he said: “There was some odd stuff in there.

“There was an Xbox box, household furniture, fabrics, old rubbish, that kind of stuff.

“This is someone getting rid of stuff, it is not commercially dumped waste.

“You get these periodic large fly tips in West Watford, and I dare say other parts of Watford.”

Cllr Turmaine, who is Watford’s Labour parliamentary candidate, added: “If I were elected the MP, I would work closely with the council to make sure they were notified of hotspots.

“I’d be happy to work with them, by meeting with them and talking about agreed communication channels when residents get in touch with me about fly tipping.”

Mayor of Watford Peter Taylor said: “Fly-tipping is a crime that we take very seriously. It not only harms our community, but also costs the council thousands of pounds a year to deal with.

“Every resident in Watford has a duty to dispose of their waste properly and our dedicated environmental crime team investigate all reported offences to make sure that catch as many fly-tippers as we can.

“I would urge all residents to report suspected fly-tips on the council website so it can be swiftly cleared, and if they see a fly-tip in progress to call the police.”
