Born on June 17, 1929, in Ilford, Bill married Claire in 1959 and the couple then moved to Rickmansworth.

Their daughter, Susan Houston, 61, said of her father: “He was a lovely dad. He worked shift patterns and when he was off, he would spend his whole days with us.”

Claire and Bill had a happy marriage until she passed away in 2011 after living with dementia.

Susan said: “They were very happy; they were a close team and I think in some ways when mum went, we got to know Dad a bit better.

Bill, who worked as a BBC television engineer for 36 years, helped to organise a street party for the Queen’s Jubilee.

The party was covered in the Watford Observer.

Susan said: “He so much enjoyed the opportunity to celebrate the Queen’s Jubilee.

“I took him shopping and he opened the Watford Observer to show his picture to the checkout girl.”

Bill's love for the outdoors and travelling stayed with him for as long as he was able to.

Susan said: “He loved walking in Scotland and travelling.

“In his 80s he went to see the bridge from Denmark to Sweden, all on his own.”

For Bill, his greatest love was for his family.

“He loved the children, especially the great grandchildren," said Susan.

“He would sit in the corner and watch them getting up to mischief."

Bill died from old age and frailty, exacerbated by a chest infection.

Susan said: “He was such a big part of our lives, he was coming round and doing jigsaw puzzles regularly.

“I look at pieces of news and think, ‘Dad's not there to share it with’.

“We were glad he didn’t suffer for very long.”

Bill’s funeral will take place at 11:40am on Monday, October 3, at West Herts Crematorium.
