A “devoted” care home manager who has worked in the sector since he was 17 - and helped his mother when he was just 12 - is up for two awards.

Wayne Hughes, the regional director for Barchester’s Chorleywood Beaumont Care Home, is up for the ‘outstanding contribution to social care award’ and the ‘putting people first award’ in the London region at the Great British Care Awards.

The purpose of the awards is to promote best practice within both the home care and care home sectors, and pay tribute to those individuals who have demonstrated outstanding excellence within their field of work.

Mr Hughes has been working with Barchester for eight years and has helped raise over £30k for charities as a keen cyclist – including the Barchester Foundation, Macmillan Cancer, PSP society and the Stroke Association.

He said: “I wasn’t expecting to be shortlisted for this award but I am so pleased, and proud. We don’t work in care for the accolades but it’s wonderful to be recognised by my team and peers, it is nothing short of an honour.

“I have been working in the social care sector since the very early age of 17, 12 if you include me assisting my mother in the day centre she worked at.

“The sector has moved on greatly with many challenges which I have embraced. Now some 30 years later I am still in a job that I love and enjoy.”

The winners for the awards will be announced on October 24 and all regional winners will go through to the next round of judging to decide the national winners in each category.
