A delegation from the Watford Labour party paid a visit to Germany and one of Watford’s formerly twinned towns.

Group leader Nigel Bell, councillor Dennis Watling, and party member Roy Healey travelled to Mainz where they were welcomed by the city’s mayor, Michael Ebling.

The trip also saw the trio meet again with members of Mainz SPD, which is the largest party in their state Parliament.

Cllr Watling has strived to retain links with Mainz, building on the work of the late Mike Jackson, former Watford Labour chairman and parliamentary candidate.

The last visit to Germany was two years ago while a delegation from Mainz came to England for the Platinum Jubilee and Watford centenary celebrations.

In Germany, the Watford members enjoyed tours of the old city, State Parliament, and took a boat along the river Rhine.

Cllr Watling said: “Mainz has so much to offer culturally and historically, forgoing party politics and the success of the SPD in the region, as a town we can learn so much from one another in this ever-changing world.

“I had a great conversation with Herbert Egner, who is chairman of Mainz friends of Watford group, at the wine festival and we are hopeful of more regular and widespread relationships moving forwards.”
