Major regeneration works in Watford town centre have now got under way as part of plans to revitalise the area.

The £200,000 revamp in Queens Road will include new granite paving, realigning street furniture, fresh greenery and extra seating among other improvements.

Work officially began last week with much of the stretch outside Primark and the Metro Bank now fenced off.

Much of the old paving outside has already been removed and what appears to be some of the new slabs are being laid.

Watford Borough Council says the scheme will continue until mid-November, when it will then stop for the Christmas period, before resuming in early January.

A permit granting permission for the plans expires on April 3, but the council aims to finish before then in early spring.

Watford’s mayor Peter Taylor said: “The local town centre is such an important part of our community and the last few years have been extremely difficult for business owners.

“These works, which have been supported by local businesses, will make the area more attractive for residents and visitors and help boost local trade.”

It is part of wider improvements to several areas including King Street, Market Street, St Albans Road and Clarendon Road.
