A new school catering for more than 1,000 children opened in Watford 121 years ago this week.
The Watford Observer is delighted to share pictures from the Watford Museum archive and this week’s image is of a former school in Judge Street.
The museum’s volunteer archivist Christine Orchard said: “The Alexandra Board School, Judge Street, was formally opened on October 16, 1901 in the newly developing Callowland estate. It was built for 440 infants and 620 older students.
“From 1918 they were taking students aged 14 years and upwards. I believe it became a secondary modern school in the 1940's.
“In the 1960s both Alexandra and Bushey Grammar schools moved to Aldenham Road, later amalgamating to form Queens' School.
“The buildings in Judge Street were later used by West Herts College.”
Watford Museum is open Thursday to Saturday, 10am to 5pm.
