Residents have held a protest to show why they are “united” in their fight over plans to bring in a new parking scheme for their street.

People living in Park Way, Rickmansworth are accusing Three Rivers District Council of pushing to introduce parking bays “against their wishes”.

They fear their street will be clogged up and harm access for emergency vehicles.

The council says the proposal for a new permit zone has come forward after complaints about parking in the area.

But angry Park Way residents demonstrated their opposition on Sunday by parking their vehicles in a way they believe shows what could happen if the proposal goes ahead.

Park Way resident David Holdstock said the street ended up at a standstill.

He continued: “We are urging the council to listen to the views of their residents and remove Park Way from this scheme.  There is not just overwhelming opposition to the plans, every resident in Park Way is opposed.

“The current arrangements in Park Way work perfectly well.  The proposals are dangerous, have not been properly worked through and could end up in a serious incident, blocking access for residents, other road users and emergency vehicles.

“We have been battling this for five years and the council is ignoring our views.”

On-street parking in Park Way is currently banned for all motorists between the hours of 8.30am and 6.30pm from Monday to Saturday.

Under the proposal published in January, a row of parking bays would be introduced down one side of Park Way for permit holders. The drawing all shows parking will also be allowed directly opposite to anyone, outside of restricted hours.

The council website says permits would be available to residents, their visitors and other people with a legitimate need to park near local addresses.

There are fears bringing in marked bays will encourage more people to park in Park Way.

According to figures published by the council following a consultation for the Rickmansworth West area, just 9% of Park Way respondents would “likely support” a new type of parking scheme.

But while some streets have been thrown out of the proposals, Park Way has not.

Rickmansworth West Conservative ward councillor Andrea Fraser says she and colleagues will continue to support residents.

A council spokesperson said: "We are listening to the concerns of a number of residents living in Park Way, Rickmansworth. It is important that any new parking scheme benefits all road users.

"A report with a full recommendation will be available in due course and is expected to be presented to the infrastructure, housing and economic development committee on November 15."
