A Watford primary school has announced the appointment of its new headteacher.

Claire Hammond, a 32-year-old from Watford, will take over Lanchester Primary School in Hempstead Road following a four-year stint teaching in China.

She told the Watford Observer she is “very excited” to join, adding: “What I am hoping to bring to the role is the building up of the community of Lanchester Primary.

"Because of Covid, there's been a lot of breakdowns and the school has been almost closed off to the parents and the community.

"So my main aim is to really develop that nurturing community.”

Asked what makes Lanchester unique, Ms Hammond continued: "I would say the children, first of all.

"They are a very lovely group of children, very enthusiastic about learning. They are very friendly, but also we have really good staff."

Ms Hammond went to school at St Clement Danes in Chorleywood and says she enjoys playing hockey and netball locally.

Lanchester was rated ‘good’ in its 2019 Ofsted report.
