A car manufacturer has lost yet another attempt to secure planning permission to install electric chargers.

Tesla has been told by Three Rivers District Council its charging points at Hunton Park Hotel in Abbots Langley are “inappropriate” development in the green belt.

It was seeking permission for 12 charging points and associated equipment in an overflow car park that could be used by any electric vehicle.

A planning statement said they would “strengthen” electric vehicle infrastructure and also pointed to the council’s climate emergency declaration and that it has committed to achieving net-zero emissions.

But a council officer concluded the development causes “harm to the significance” of the Grade II listed hotel, while also failing to “preserve” the openness of the green belt.

Tesla has previously seen an application in 2019 for a car parking area and 16 chargers thrown out by a planning inspector before similar plans were rejected again by the council in 2021.

According to the government planning appeals portal, there are two ongoing cases of enforcement action by the council over land at the hotel.
