The final proposals for new political constituencies have been drawn up – and it could mean your MP is changing.

The independent Boundary Commission for England has been working on changes to boundaries following months of consultation.

If the latest proposals are signed off, they will be submitted to Parliament in July 2023 and come into force for the next scheduled General Election in 2024.

Here’s what the review means for people living in Watford and the surrounding areas.

Watford

The Watford constituency is currently made up of the 12 wards that make up Watford Borough Council, along with Abbots Langley, Leavesden, parts of Gade Valley, Oxhey Hall and Carpenders Park.

The final recommendations will see the 12 wards in Watford retained and the areas of Three Rivers mentioned above moving to South West Hertfordshire.

However, the ward of Bushey North, which is currently part of the Hertsmere parliamentary constituency, will become a part of Watford.

During consultation, the proposed changes for the Watford boundary were “largely uncontentious and supported”, including by local political parties, but did not “elicit a large number of representations”.

South West Hertfordshire

The parliamentary constituency of South West Hertfordshire is currently made up of some areas of Three Rivers and Dacorum districts.

Under the recommended proposals, it will only include the areas currently part of Three Rivers District Council, including Bedmond, as well as Kings Langley.

The plan was for the constituency to be called Three Rivers but Conservative members, including current MP Gagan Mohindra, felt this was an “inappropriately unspecific” name because there are “various” organisations around the country that use the Three Rivers name, and also because Kings Langley is not part of Three Rivers district.

It was recommended by them to keep the South West Hertfordshire name and the commission has agreed.

Hertsmere

The Hertsmere parliamentary constituency remains mostly unchanged, except Bushey North will become part of Watford while Northaw & Cuffley will join from Welwyn & Hatfield.

Dacorum

Bovingdon, Chipperfield, and Flaunden will leave South West Hertfordshire to become a part of the Hemel Hempstead parliamentary constituency.

The final consultation of revised constituency proposals is open now until December 5. The public are invited to view and comment on the new map at https://www.bcereviews.org.uk/.
