Flooding has been an issue in Water Lane for many years but this was taken into account when this building was constructed.
The Watford Observer is delighted to share pictures from the Watford Museum archive and this week we remember a college in the town.
The museum’s volunteer archivist Christine Orchard said: “The George Stephenson College was in Water Lane, and began being used by engineering students from the Technical College in 1965. This was prior to completion and the official opening in 1966.
“The building was unusual being built on stilts which took into account the regular flooding in the area.
“The college remained in use until the 1990s but in 1994 the building was demolished and the site taken by Tesco – I believe their petrol station is positioned here now.”
Watford Museum is open Thursday to Saturday, 10am to 5pm.
