Plans to fix a “hazardous” community centre car park full of “deep” potholes have been given a big funding boost.

Watford FC Community Sports & Education Trust has been awarded £20,000 to make improvements at Meriden Community Centre in Garsmouth Way.

The trust says drivers currently have to swerve to avoid potholes that are becoming “bigger and deeper” which can result in “near misses”.

Proposals to make the car park safer also include painting white lines and coloured walkway strips.

It is hoped the work will be completed by the end of March.

The whole project is expected to cost around £32,000 and has been boosted after it was chosen as one of 16 beneficiaries of Watford Borough Council’s Neighbourhood Grant funding pot – which is cash generated from developers to improve infrastructure.

Steve Williams, head of facilities and inclusion at the trust, said: “The trust is delighted the council has been able to support our grant application towards the corrective works within the car park.

“As well as keeping the surface free of potholes, the proposed white lining should allow for more vehicles to come into the car park to reduce the need for vehicles to park outside of our facility.

“This project comes at a time when the whole of the Meriden Park is also being upgraded to provide a more enjoyable experience for residents and visitors.”
