Numerous trains serving Watford Junction have been cancelled after "a total signal failure in the Watford area".

There have already been cancellations throughout the morning to Euston-bound trains with more scheduled until at least 6pm today (January 23).

London Northwestern Railway blamed it on a fault with the signalling system, before confirming at 7.14am there had been a complete failure.

There was also a fire next to the track at Kenton which caused disruption to London Overground services.

National Rail has warned trains may still be cancelled, delayed by up to an hour or revised while services return to normal.

All those affected appear to have been fast trains into the capital, while those taking around 51 minutes are currently scheduled as on time.

London Northwestern warned of "major disruption" to and from Euston with tickets being accepted on the following operators/routes:

Chiltern: to/from Marylebone
Thameslink: to/from St. Pancras
EMR: to/from St. Pancras
Overground: Watford to/from Euston Underground: Met & Circle/H&C lines.

Responding to disgruntled commuters online, the operator said it was unable to say how long the delays are expected to last until updates are received from Network Rail.

“But even if resolved swiftly the congestion that has already built will take some time to clear,” it added.
