It is “only a matter of time before someone is killed” at a treacherous junction, residents have warned.

One person needed hospital treatment after a “nasty” two-car crash at the Tower Hill-Chapel Croft junction in Chipperfield on Friday (March 3).

The “death trap” spot connects key roads to Kings Langley and Bovingdon, but motorists said it is plagued by parked cars making it a blind turning.

Claire Goodman, who claims to have seen vehicles blocking the view at the time of Friday’s crash, added: “It’s no wonder cars/vans struggle to see pulling out.

“Someone will be killed at that junction and all because diners want to park 2ft from the restaurant door as opposed to 20ft in the church car park opposite.”

Another wrote online: “Oh Lord, always been dangerous there, added obstruction makes it a death trap.”

A big issue appears to be leaving cars outside the Osteria restaurant – despite the eatery’s requests not to – which sparked some into calling for double-yellow lines.

One of those was Nick Brodrick, who saw a huge police presence after the crash left a Nissan Micra and Ford Tourneo wrecked at around 7pm.

“The visibility of traffic coming from Chipperfield to people turning right from Kings Langley to Bovingdon is almost non-existent,” he said. “It’s only a matter of time before someone is killed at this location.”

Referring to pulling out onto Tower Hill, another driver said: “So many times you go, no one is there, then next thing you know they are behind you flashing and beeping for pulling out on them. [The junction] Needs a big sign saying slow down.”

The Osteria manager, Savas Tekcan, said he has been told of bad accidents long before they opened six months ago, and claimed the problem goes deeper than nearby parking.

He bemoaned the poor lighting and broken ‘stop’ sign, meaning drivers are sometimes unaware of cars whizzing down Tower Hill. He believes traffic lights or a roundabout are needed.

Asked about calls for traffic calming measures, a Hertfordshire County Council spokesperson said: “We will need to wait for any police investigation of the recent crash to see what the cause was and whether or not parked vehicles were a factor.”

It is understood that the police process for crashes involving injuries, such as evidence gathering and creating a report, can take several weeks before details are received by the council.
