The chance for a girl who fled war-torn Ukraine to attend a performing arts school could slip away if fees are not raised in time.

Sonya, aged 13, attends The Purcell School in Bushey where she plays the piano.

She has beaten thousands of other applicants from across the country to win a place at the National Youth Music Theatre, where she will appear in their upcoming production in London.

So far, Sonya’s parents have been able to contribute £350 and £385 has been raised through a JustGiving page, but a further £615 is still needed.

A message on the funding page says: “It is an incredible achievement for a 13-year-old. Having overcome the trauma of fleeing from her home, to audition against hundreds of talented young musicians.”

Sonya was just three when she first appeared on stage and has travelled outside of Ukraine appearing with renowned choirs and productions.

The pianist also wowed the crowds at Watford’s Memorial Day on February 24 to remember the victims of Ukraine following Putin’s invasion.

Several events were held across the day including a church service, candlelit vigil and raising of the Ukrainian Flag at the Town Hall.
