The Watford Observer is again delighted to team up with its friends at Watford Museum to look at some structures, objects or business from the town’s past that have either disappeared or been relocated.
This week we recall a Watford coachbuilders located where a pizza restaurant and hairdressing salon can be found today.
The museum’s volunteer archivist Christine Orchard said: “The Christmas family had a coach building business at 141 and 143 High Street.
“I believe the business was started by Thomas Christmas in the 1820s, and with the company being passed to Eleazar and later Alfred. The business remaining here until at least 1912 by which time they had branched out into motor car coachworks too.
“There were a number of companies associated with this trade along the High Street, but presumably once vehicles were being produced with metal bodies more room was needed and high street shops were no longer practical.”
Watford Museum is open Thursday to Saturday, 10am to 5pm.
