Even though this view is at least half a century old it remains instantly recognisable to this day.
The Watford Observer is delighted to share pictures from the Watford Museum archive and this week we reflect on this scene of the pond and the streetscape, in particular two prominent buildings on the right.
The museum’s volunteer archivist Christine Orchard said: “Watford's pond has changed over the years, but the general appearance of the area seems little altered.
“Anyone seeing the same scene in the 1930s would have seen the development of this streetscape. Today, everyone will have different recollection of the pond and the shops around.
“On the right-hand side of this picture postcard, one prominent shop was Cater's supermarket which opened in 1965, with Top Rank above it. Both were where there had once been an Odeon cinema.”
Watford Museum is open Thursday to Saturday, 10am to 5pm.
