These attractive cottages were once located on the outskirts of Watford and shared a name with a well-known nearby pub.

The Watford Observer is delighted to share pictures from the Watford Museum archive and this week we recall the Wheatsheaf cottages.

The museum’s volunteer archivist Christine Orchard said: “The Wheatsheaf cottages used to be between Eastbury Road and the river Colne, on a plot of land very close to what is now Oxhey Park.

“According to the October 1966 edition of Hertfordshire Countryside, they were ‘adjacent to Granny Bird's fairground and the side of the Bijou Theatre. They were demolished with the coming of the Bakerloo tube and railway’.

“They shared their name with the Wheatsheaf pub and although they were a little way from the High Street, the houses still had a cobbled surface in front.”

Watford Museum is open Thursday to Saturday, 10am to 5pm.
