Work is progressing on Watford’s new police station that was purchased for £6.5 million.

Scaffolding has been erected around the building in George Street after Hertfordshire Constabulary was granted planning permission for the site in 2021.

It is expected to open in October or November, although the police have said that this is not “set in stone”.

The new station will maintain a front counter service but there will be no custody suite.

Once open, it will have parking for 30 police vehicles with 35 spaces for staff and 40 cycling spaces. There is no visitor parking proposed.

The current police station is in Shady Lane and was described by the Police and Crime Commissioner’s office as being at the “end of its economic life” and “no longer fit for modern policing needs”.

It is believed that the new location will allow foot patrols to be carried out with greater ease, whilst its proximity to the ring road allows a faster vehicle response to reported incidents.
