This business has long since disappeared but the building it occupied is still standing and recognisable.

The Watford Observer is delighted to share pictures from the archive at Watford Museum and this week we recall this scene at the Corner of Queens Road and Prince Street.

The museum’s volunteer archivist Christine Orchard said: “A carriage building business was a kind of predecessor to today's car dealerships.

“The Watford Carriage Works was at the corner of Queens Road and Prince Street, a business established in 1837.

“It had been run by W. Tucker since the 1870s and by 1891, at the time of this image, there was a large showroom on the ground floor of the main building, with all aspects of carriage construction being carried out in workshops on the premises. By 1896 he had acquired premises in the High Street too.

“It seems the business was large enough to be able to do repairs and purchase or part exchange old carriages which I expect they renovated and sold on.”

Watford Museum is open Thursday to Saturday, 10am to 5pm.
