Storm Babet is set to bring heavy rain and strong winds to the UK but it is not forecast to be of the magnitude of a weather event that hit the country 36 years ago this week.

The Great Storm of 1987 happened on the night of October 15 and 16, bringing hurricane-force winds in excess of 100mph across southern England and northern France which had not been forecast.

Photographers from the Watford Observer travelled across our area the following morning to capture the scenes of devastation and disruption, with hundreds of trees uprooted, some roads impassable while some people woke to find their homes and cars extensively damaged.
