Pupils at a Croxley Green school were having a shell of a time reading and singing with tortoises.
The youngsters at York House School have been entertaining their reptilian friends by practicing the key skills as part of their learning.
The private school has a farm, home to over 50 animals, which is used to help keep the children engaged.
Pre-prep kids, aged three to seven, have been using the tortoises daily to read stories to and sing nursery rhymes with, as well as participating in outdoor animal searches and exploring local wildlife.
Headteacher Jon Gray said: “Our youngest children have benefited enormously from their interactions with our resident animals. It has really brought learning to life and has created real experiences for the children to use in their learning.
“For many of our youngest children, it’s the first time they have been so close to a farm animal, and it has been wonderful to see their faces so full of awe as the animals interact with them.”
The children have also had sessions with animals which included creating a replica of the Three Billy Goats Gruff and the Three Little Pigs.
York House is a private preparatory school for children aged three to 13, located on Sarratt Road.
