A Chorleywood South and Maple Cross councillor was officially sworn in yesterday as the new Chair for Three Rivers District Council.

Members unanimously elected Raj Khiroya at a full council meeting on Tuesday, December 12, and he will occupy the role for the rest of the 2023/24 municipal year.

Cllr Tony Humphreys of Penn and Mill End was also appointed Vice-Chair for the rest of the term.

Liberal Democrat councillor Khiroya takes over from his colleague Phil Williams, who resigned as Council Chair and a district councillor in October.

Williams, who continues as a county councillor for Three Rivers Rural, said he was resigning for personal reasons and hoped to spend more time with his family.

Cllr Khiroya was originally born in Uganda and came to the UK in 1969. He has lived in Chorleywood for over 35 years with his wife Tanuja and has two adult sons.

Cllr Khiroya said: “I am honoured to serve as Chair of Three Rivers District Council. I have thoroughly enjoyed my time as Vice-Chair and I look forward to representing the council at events and meeting residents, local charities and voluntary organisations.

“I would also like to thank Phil Williams for his dedication as Chair and for serving the role with honour and integrity.”
