Two schoolboys wait at the entrance of a newsagents that plenty of people once visited to pick up their morning paper or buy another product.

The Watford Observer has again teamed up with its friends at Watford Museum to look back at structures, objects or businesses from the town’s past that have either disappeared or been relocated and this week we recall a newsagents in a parade of shops.

The museum’s volunteer archivist Christine Orchard said: “Lots of little shop building are being redeveloped so it's nice to find one parade that remains unchanged. Standen's Newsagents however has gone but was at 79 Tolpits Lane. There was a hardware store to the left and Co Op supermarket on the right.

“Standen's were at 79 in the mid-1960s but the newsagents had a new name by 1972. It seems that the supermarket next door took on 79 at some point and expanded their existing store. It is part of a Morrisons (previously McColls) supermarket.”
