A woman in her 80s is fighting for her life after a “horrific” two-car crash near Bushey.

Emergency services rushed to the collision at the junction of Stanmore Hill and Heathbourne Road, in Stanmore, at 10.51am yesterday (January 8).

The London Ambulance Service had said three people were injured, with two taken to hospital, but were initially unable to confirm if anyone was seriously hurt.

But a Met Police spokesperson has now told the Watford Observer: “The driver of one of the cars, a woman in her 80s, was taken to hospital where she remains in a life-threatening condition. Her family have been informed.

“Two other people were treated for minor injuries. Enquiries are ongoing.”

A picture from the scene shows a red car on its roof in woodland, with a badly damaged silver car opposite on a verge beside a wonky bus stop.

Commentators on social media described the crash as “horrendous” and “horrific”, as motorists reported being diverted in the area for several hours.

The London Fire Brigade deployed two fire engines and around 10 firefighters, who rescued three people and worked to make the scene safe, a spokesperson said.
