A man in his 40s has died after a crash on the A1(M) this morning.

Herts Police were called at 6.33am today (January 22) to reports of a collision between junctions 1 (South Mimms) and 2 (Welham Green) northbound.

A force spokesperson said: “It is reported that a Renault Megane was on its side. Emergency services attended the scene and the carriageway was shut in both directions.

"Sadly, the driver, the sole occupant of the vehicle was pronounced dead at the scene. His next of kin have been informed and are being supported by officers.

"Enquiries are ongoing to establish the circumstances around the collision. Anyone with information is asked to please call 101 quoting ISR 114 of 22 January.”

With the investigation just starting it is too early to confirm whether another vehicle is believed to have been involved, the spokesperson added.

It comes amid widespread Hertfordshire travel disruption caused by Storm Isha.

There was another crash on the M1 near Hemel Hempstead on the southbound carriageway, between junctions 9 and 8, which is believed to have happened at around 7am.

There is also rail disruption affecting Watford Junction which will last all day, according to National Rail, after an engineering train derailed yesterday (Sunday).

National Rail said on its website: “An engineering train has derailed on the line between Watford Junction / Willesden Junction and Clapham Junction.

"As a result, trains running between these stations are disrupted until the end of the day on Monday 22 January.”
