The High Sheriff of Hertfordshire visited a series of libraries in a bid to raise awareness of the daily problems faced by those with low literacy.

Liz Green was joined by councillor Raj Khiroya, vice chair of Three Rivers District Council, as they visited Rickmansworth, Croxley Green, Oxhey and Chorleywood libraries on Monday.

They were joined by former Watford player Luther Blissett OBE DL at Oxhey library.

Liz Green said: "There are so many fantastic and varied activities that are run by each library – from knit and natter to special opening times at Croxley Green, Duolingo books and healthy hubs for consultations about housing benefits or the chance to see the district nurse. "

During their visit, they were shown how to download various reading apps, and cllr Khiroya successfully applied for a library card.

Chorleywood library, which has been run by volunteers for the past seven years, also showcased some of its community activities.

Liz Green voiced her admiration for the wide-range of programmes including reading, knitting, chess, and coding.

She also acknowledged the libraries' role in addressing social isolation, their partnerships with local businesses and services, and their initiatives to support those suffering from dementia.

Her tour aims to visit every one of the 46 libraries in Hertfordshire between January and March 2024.

During these visits, Liz Green, will be fundraising for the Hertfordshire Community Foundation and championing the work of the Shannon Trust.
