A popular annual tradition that holds a “special place” in the hearts of organisers could be cut unless it attracts more support from businesses and the wider community.

The Ricky Pancake Race will take place in Rickmansworth High Street as planned on Tuesday at 11am.

Organised by Watford Mencap and now in its 25th year, the event has become a local tradition as businesses assemble teams of four to showcase their pancake-flipping finesse as they navigate the high street.

Six teams are currently signed up to take part. This is the same number as last year, but at its peak around 16 would participate and the charity fears the event will be no longer sustainable unless it can attract more support.

Watford Mencap’s fundraising manager Michelle Hamilton said: “At Watford Mencap, traditions like the Ricky Pancake Race hold a special place in our hearts. This year, however, the race faces a difficult hurdle. Without the support of local businesses and community groups, this beloved event that brings laughter and joy to so many may not see another year.

“We understand the challenges businesses face, but even a small contribution can make a big difference.

“By supporting the Ricky Pancake Race, you're not just ensuring that a fun community event continues beyond the last 25 years, you're helping to raise vital funds to support people with learning disabilities in Rickmansworth and the surrounding areas.

“Whether you’re a team of four or a single runner, all are welcome. If you can’t take part then please come to cheer on the runners or donate to our JustGiving campaign.”

One of the key features of the race is its commitment to making a positive impact on the community and ensuring it is an inclusive event that all abilities can take part in.

The event is sponsored by estate agents Gibbs Gillespie and a spokesperson said: “Gibbs Gillespie is proud to sponsor the Rickmansworth Pancake again this year. This is always a highly anticipated event on the town calendar, and it is thoroughly enjoyed by all.”

The entry fee is £10 for an individual to take part in Tuesday's race, while it costs £80 for a team of four.
