Nearly 300 people braved a night outdoors to raise thousands of pounds in the Stadium Sleep Out held by Dreams United last week.

The event, which took place on the chilly night of Friday, March 1 at Watford FC’s Vicarage Road Stadium, aimed at raising funds and awareness for those facing homelessness.

The poignant initiative was organised by Dreams United, formed of homelessness charities One YMCA, New Hope, Herts Young Homeless and DENS, in partnership with Watford FC's Community Sports & Education Trust.

Participants traded the comfort of their homes for sleeping bags, getting a faint glimpse of the struggles faced by those forced to sleep on the streets.

Participant Lisa McCallum said: "After the sleepout I headed home to a warm house and bed, goodness knows how people who are homeless cope.

"I didn't get any sleep it was so cold and this winter has been milder this year.

"Raising money for this cause is so important as it makes such a difference."

As well as members of the public, Watford FC legend Luther Blissett OBE DL and Watford mayor Peter Taylor also slept rough to voice their support for the crucial work of the charities.

The mayor said: "(I'm) so grateful to everyone involved in the community sleep out at Vicarage Road, and to Watford Football Club for hosting us.

"Special thanks to the headline sponsors Imagine and to the brilliant Electric Umbrella for entertaining us."

Proceeds from the event are projected to come close to the fundraising target of £50,000.

Donations are still being accepted and can be made through Watford FC's Community Sports & Education Trust.
