Two separate shoplifters have been sentenced over stealing alcohol from the Watford M&S.

Sean Callan, of The Fairway in Abbots Langley, appeared at Hatfield Remand Court yesterday, April 15, accused of assault by beating, assaulting an emergency worker and theft from a shop.

Hertfordshire Police labelled the 38-year-old a "violent shoplifter" online when he was charged over taking alcohol during the incident in High Street on April 13. 

Callan pleaded guilty to all charges and was ordered to pay £120 in compensation each to two victims and a £60 fine.

In a separate incident, Matthew King, of Brightwell Road in Watford, also appeared at Hatfield Remand Court yesterday charged with two counts of theft and two breaches of a Community Protection Notice.

He had been banned from the town centre "to try and stop his offending", according to police.

The 52-year-old admitted stealing bottles of alcohol from the M&S in High Street on March 26 and was sentenced to 16 weeks in prison suspended for 12 months.
