It is approaching 36 years since its plant closed but Scammell remains a name synonymous with Watford’s industrial past.
The British truck manufacturer was based in Tolpits Lane for more than 60 years until its site closed in 1988, having become particularly well known for the vehicles it built for specialist and military purposes.
News from the company featured regularly in the Watford Observer over the years and 61 years ago this week it was celebrating a notable achievement.

A photographer visited Scammell Lorries on May 25, 1963 to capture these images of the 100,000th trailer to be towed off the production line.
The sign on the trailer proudly declared: "The 100,000th Scammell semi-trailer from Europe's leading manufacturers."
The company’s centenary was marked with a gathering of trucks in Watford two years ago.
Former employees and Scammell enthusiasts converged on King George V Playing Fields on May 1, 2022, exactly 100 years since the firm was incorporated.
The former factories are now home to housing, a business estate and industrial parks, but Scammell still remains arguably the best known British manufacturer of trucks.
