A family-run fish and chop has been named among the UK's best.

The Corner Plaice in Baldwins Lane, Croxley Green, has been included in trade publication Fry Magazine's list of the nation's 50 best fish and chip shops.

The awards seek to recognise the "standout chippies" that have displayed "high standards, community spirit and resilience during a challenging year".

Owner Harry Kyriakou told the Watford Observer: "We are very happy to be recognised as one of the UK's best, the hope is to get more custom off the back of it, especially with February being one of the quieter months of the year."

The shop has been in Harry's family for nearly 50 years and he began working there at the age of 13. The 44-year-old described the business as a "traditional shop that knows its customers well", specialising in sourcing fresh fish, primarily from Scotland and the Shetlands.

On how things are currently going, he said: "It has been bumpy and once you think you have got one cost under control, something else rears its head. We have to keep on top of things and we are pushing in the right direction and wanting to be optimistic."

"Awards like this definitely give us motivation," he added.

Harry believes the last five to 10 years have been the most challenging time for the industry since he started.

On the awards, competition organiser Reece Head said: "Congratulations to this year’s Fry Award winners. Over the past 12 months, these operators have faced significant challenges, including higher wage costs, rising energy bills and exceptional pressure on fish prices.

"Despite this, they have maintained consistently high standards, supported and motivated their teams, and kept customers informed as changes were needed. That commitment was evident to our mystery judges and is what secured each business a place among the UK’s leading fish and chip shops."

The Corner Plaice was the only chip shop in Hertfordshire to make the cut.
